A steep embankment and poorly designed and linked living spaces close to the home were the chief problems posed at this bushland North Shore home.

With large sections of bedrock to negotiate and a steep fall, a clever combination of timber and stone walls were designed to terrace the steep embankment. Exposing the massive bedrock unearthed a natural treasure which the semi-dry stone walls beautifully complemented. The combination of stone and timber was efficient and cost effective as stone walls were built onto existing bedrock and timber walls where there was no bedrock. The entire embankment was planted out with a beautiful series of native plants including Acacia Limelight, Hairpin Banksia, Blueberry Ash, Gmea lily, Lomandra, Grevillea and Agonis species achieving incredible coour and texture variance as well as creating a haven for native birds. Atop the newly terraced embankment sits a large new turf area for family activities. The entertaining area adjacent to the home needed some urgent attention. The new design links the home with the generous timber deck, gives easy access to a new modern paved laundry area and beyond to allow rear of home access, a new masonry retaining wall and all planted beautifully with more colourful, bird attracting and low maintenance native plants. A new safety fence providing security for young children was installed as well.
The final element of the new home frontage was the driveway. A dangerously slippery old pebblecrete driveway was revamped into a new, wider stenciled drive with excellent traction for both vehicles and pedestrians. The natural earthy colours complemented the existing home colours as well as reflecting those chosen for pavers and the surounding rock, stone and timber.
